Marking your queen makes it so much easier to identify her when she is playing hide and seek in the hive on an inspection.  There is a colour scheme in use for marking honey bee queens which not everyone uses, often because we use the colour in our hive tool bag or in our suit pocket.  When you spot her you do not want to loose the moment and have to act quickly!

The colour scheme works on numbers – you use the number at the end of the year, in rotation

White – for years that end in 1 or 6.

Yellow – year ends in 2 or 7.

Red –  year ends in 3 or 8.

Green  – year ends in 4 or 9

Blue – year  ends in a 5 or a 0.

There is a phrase that helps us memorise this

What! You Rear Green Bees?

Then remember is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and start again!
